First of all. I am obsessed with the following video.
As my Facebook status said last week, she is truly the epitome of class. She was the sole member of Victor/Victoria company to be nominated for a Tony, and despite having won the Drama Desk Award for Best Actress in a Musical (thus making her a favorite to win the Tony), she turned down the nomination to stand proud with her cast. Maybe I'm just an odd individual, but I really think this is the coolest thing ever. I have never known anyone, especially including myself, to be so selfless and classy. She's a little bit my hero.
In other news...
This semester is going beautifully. I finally feel like I really have a home here at Trinity. Earlier in the year, I couldn't help but question my decision to go here. Should I have put more effort into my college search? Why didn't I go to a bigger school with a better-known name? But I know now that this really is the place I belong. My friends here are so great, and it's so weird to think about how my relationships with them are so different than the ones I had with people in high school. It's different, but definitely good.
Even though I know now that I belong here at Trinity, I'm still not sure what I'm supposed to be doing here...that is, what-should-I-be-studying-wise. I am just a few short years away from the real world and that is absolutely terrifying to me. I'm trying to keep my options open...sticking on the communication major track while dipping my foot in some other areas (Is that even an expression? Wow, I'm lame.). I'm even expanding my cultural horizons by living on the Chinese Culture Hall next year (it's a fun, but long story--just ask). And of course, I'm still managing to have fun with things like my fraternity and choir.
Summer is nearing and that's exciting and a little scary at the same time. I know I'm not the only one who feels at home at their school. I'm going home this weekend for Easter, and while last semester I would have jumped on the opportunity to go home and see people, I almost decided to stay here this time around. Everyone from home is a different person than the one who graduated almost a year ago, and that really is so awesome but also inevitably weird. Some of us are still really into the arts, some have left them completely...some people drink every weekend and some don't...the list goes on. We have different friends, do different things with them, and thusly have become different people. Obviously, I'm dramatizing a little, but the fact is it won't be the same. I guess this really hit me when a handfull of high schoolers called me on Saturday night, telling me how excited they were that UIL One-Act had advanced passed District. I congratulated them enthusiastically, of course, but honestly, I really just wanted to tell them how insignificant OAP is...that they are putting so much effort into something with such little reward. I mean, if you get to state, doesn't that mean you're as good as that poorly-acted chair-forested fake-bearded Rimers of Eldritch from last year? Seriously. There is so much in this world that's more important than what goes on in that threatre department and they will learn that just like I did. So yeah, some tangential thinking going on here, but I guess that's what really opened my eyes this past week to how different I am from that boy who walked the stage at TCU almost a year ago.
Wow, this note was a lot longer than I anticipated, but no one will probably read it so I guess it doesn't matter! So yeah. In short...
- Julie Andrews = amazing
- Trinity = amazing
- Change = definitely weird, but undoubtedly amazing as well
